How To: Have a High Energy Pregnancy

by For Two Fitness

How can you have a high energy pregnancy? Read this guest post about how to enjoy a happy, healthy pregnancy.

Exercise is imperative for a happy, healthy pregnancy. It boosts mood, helps sleeping patterns and reduces overall aches and pains. Beyond immediate benefits to mind and body, exercise also helps prevent serious complications like gestational diabetes and can help fend off preeclampsia.

Many pregnant women experience feelings of fatigue during their nine months and often miss the days when they could reach for energy drinks and get a much-needed boost during the day. A healthy diet is extremely important for both mother and baby and natural things like fruits and vegetables will provide a surprising amount of energy for expectant moms. Healthy proteins are also advisable, such as oily fish or lean cuts of meat. And carbohydrates shouldn’t be left out, as their slow release of energy is much more satisfying than getting a sugar rush from chocolate or other snack foods.

Soon-to-be mums should always exercise their best judgement as it relates to their bodies, their pregnancies and their physical abilities. Pregnancy exercise routines don’t have to be strenuous. Low-impact activities like walking, swimming or even dancing can be a great way to get heart rates up, manage weight gain and keep muscles limber without causing undue stress to the baby.

These kind of exercises are also great for mental health. Swimming makes many women feel completely weightless which is a much needed escape from the extra pounds of pregnancy, and is exercises both large muscle groups (arms and legs). Walking can be done anywhere, anytime and is a great way to keep fit without putting undue stress on knees or ankles.

Low-impact aerobics – whether it’s dancing in the living room or a class specifically for maternity – can help strengthen and tone the body and potentially build camaraderie with other expectant moms. Group exercise can be a great option for first-time moms as they provide important reassurance that every movement is specifically designed for pregnancy and completely safe for the baby.

A healthy and active physical routine combined with a balanced diet will ensure a comfortable and complication-free pregnancy. Decisions about diet, exercise and everything else should always be made within the boundaries of what makes you feel most comfortable. Exercising the body is important but exercising good judgement is key. Each woman is different and knows their own body better than anyone so be sure to listen to your baby and your body to ensure optimal health for both.
