Tuning In – How Running Told Her She Was Pregnant

by For Two Fitness

Today, we introduce Hollie Reina, a 32 year old freelance journalist and full-time mother of two,  now  nine weeks pregnant with her third baby. She lives in southern California and is a marathoner and would-be triathlete (her half-ironman plans are on pause due to this pregnancy) with a passion for the outdoors, running, cycling.  In fact, she was once a professional hiking and mountain biking guide for two fancy outdoorsy spas in Utah.  Read on as she tells the tale of the moment she realized she was pregnant…

The tacos were warm, spicy and literally dripping with flavor. Probably not the best pre-run food but I didn’t care. As I sat there licking, very un-ladylike, every last drop of juice from my fingers it occurred to me that no amount of will power could have persuaded me not to patronize those fine purveyors of pork perfection otherwise known as the taco truck. In hindsight maybe the extra spicy salsa was a bad idea… but then again maybe it wasn’t.
It was June and I was smack dab in the middle of my fall marathon training. On tap for the evening was a speed workout on the treadmill. The drill, of my own design, is an all-out sweat splattering suffer fest and I loved it. But something was amiss that night and it was more than the tacos.
As runners, and fitness fanatics alike we take special care to be in tune with our bodies. We know when to fuel them, when to push them and (usually) we know when to give them a rest. But what about other bigger things? I have heard of runners who have experienced odd pains when running only to discover cancer. The bodies early detection system can be an incredible tool to those who are paying attention.
That night was my night. Shortly after my warm-up when I would have normally shifted into a high and unrelenting gear for the duration of my workout I was suddenly arrested with the worst sort of heart burn imaginable. “Those damn tacos are going to have the last word,” were my first thoughts. My second thoughts on the matter were a little more disturbing. They went like this:
“Hmmm, I haven’t felt this kind of heart burn since I was pregnant.”
“Oh crap what if I am pregnant?”
“Nah, it is just the tacos.”
But the thought lingered with me into the weekend until I couldn’t stand it anymore. I finally went to the store where I purchased a pee stick that would confirm what running had already told me…I was pregnant.

While I still don’t think street tacos and running are a good mix, I will always endorse running as a way to help us understand our bodies and be in tune to what is going on inside them.
